GHANA – STEERING COMMITTEE OF THE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION BILL COALITION VISIT MINISTER FOR GENDER.

The Steering Committee of Affirmative Action Bill Coalition, led by its Convener, Sheila Minkah-Premo paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, to discuss the proposed implementation plan for the Affirmative Action Act of Ghana.

During the meeting, the Coalition expressed appreciation for the passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act by Parliament on July 30, 2024, and its subsequent assent into law on September 19, 2024. They emphasized the Act’s significance in promoting gender equality and increasing women’s representation in decision-making roles.

The Act mandates a minimum 30% representation of women in key governance structures, with a progressive target of 50% by 2030. It also requires both the public and private sectors to adopt gender-responsive policies to address existing disparities.

The delegation presented a detailed implementation plan outlining short-term, medium-term, and long-term actions to ensure the Act’s effective execution.

Key Issues Discussed includes the establishment of an implementation committee to oversee the rollout of the Act, review and alignment of existing policies, an audit of existing laws and policies to ensure they align with the principles of affirmative action and gender equity and public education and media campaigns amongst others

In response, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey commended Coalition for their advocacy efforts and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to implementing the Act effectively. She emphasized that gender equity remains a priority for the Ministry and assured the delegation that steps are being taken to facilitate the formation of the Gender Equity Committee to oversee the implementation of the Act as well as the passing of the Legislative Instrument to help operationalize the Act.

The Minister highlighted the broader role of the Ministry, describing it as the “conscience of the state” when it comes to gender issues.

She stressed the need for thoughtful, inclusive strategic planning to ensure that the Affirmative Action Act is implemented in a way that it achieves sustainable and meaningful change.

She further emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on the progress of implementation.

She concluded by encouraging all stakeholders to stay the course and remain engaged in the process.

“We must continue working together to ensure that what we present is strong, inclusive, and lasting,” she affirmed.

The meeting reinforced the shared commitment between Coalition and the Ministry to ensuring that the Affirmative Action Act is fully implemented to achieve its intended impact.

Both parties agreed to work together in advancing gender equality, increasing women’s participation in leadership, and promoting inclusivity in governance and development.
