African women researchers are shining in medical research. The Merck Foundation has just announced the winners of the prestigious MARS 2024 Award (Merck Africa Research Summit), recognizing the excellence of their work in reproductive and maternal health.

This year, three brilliant scientists particularly distinguished themselves in the “Best African Women Researchers” category:

Dr. Ayobola Abimbola Sonuga from Nigeria won first place for her innovative research on the link between vitamin D and gestational diabetes. Her work contributes to a better understanding of risk factors during pregnancy.

South African Dr. Nompumelelo Lebogang Malaza was awarded second place for her comprehensive study on biochemical markers in diabetic pregnancies, opening new perspectives for monitoring expectant mothers.

Dr. Dorotheah Obiri from Ghana completes this trio of excellence with her research on placental malaria and hypertension during pregnancy, common complications in Africa.

“These awards celebrate their significant contributions to research, particularly highlighting the efforts of African women researchers, who remain underrepresented in this field,” emphasizes Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of the Merck Foundation.

This recognition comes with a unique opportunity: the winners will receive training at a leading research institute in India, thus strengthening their expertise and international networks.

The Merck Foundation continues its commitment to empowering women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in Africa. The call for applications for the 2025 edition is already open, with a particular focus on “The role of scientific research in women’s health and reproductive care.”

These awards not only illustrate the scientific excellence of African women but also their essential contribution to improving maternal health on the continent. They pave the way for a new generation of women researchers, proving that African science in the feminine has a bright future ahead.
