From May 23 to 31, 2024, a joint campaign to raise awareness and fight obstetric fistula in Africa was carried out by Afiya, L’Africaine, Afiya For Her and Go Médical.

This initiative brought together a wide range of actors from diverse backgrounds: from doctors to media women, artists and representatives of other professions, from Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo and Nigeria.

A strong commitment to break the silence

The main objective of the campaign was to shed light on obstetric fistula, a disease that is too often misunderstood and stigmatized and affects thousands of women in Africa. The efforts made during these nine days have made it possible to:

Raise public awareness: The campaign helped to inform people about the causes, symptoms and devastating consequences of obstetric fistula, thus breaking the silence surrounding this disease.

Mobilize key players: Key actors from civil society, the media and governments were mobilized to commit to the fight against obstetric fistula and work towards its elimination by 2030.

Encourage activism: The campaign sparked a wave of solidarity and activism around the cause of women affected by obstetric fistula, encouraging women’s rights defenders to become more involved in finding concrete solutions to eradicate it.

A Stepping Stone Towards a Future Without Obstetric Fistula

With the results of this campaign, we highlight that the fight against obstetric fistula is far from won. Therefore, we reaffirm our commitment to continue efforts and call for broader collaborations to:

Expand the reach of awareness: It is crucial to continue awareness-raising efforts both on the ground and in the media to reach an even wider audience and definitively break the taboos surrounding obstetric fistula.

Strengthen prevention: The implementation of effective prevention plans and programs, including access to quality emergency obstetric care, the elimination of early marriage and poverty, is essential to significantly reduce the number of new cases of obstetric fistula.

Improve access to treatment: It is essential to increase access to quality surgical repair services and adequate post-operative care for women with obstetric fistula.

A Message of Hope and Solidarity

The joint campaign to eliminate obstetric fistula in Africa has brought its strength to the fight against this devastating disease. The success of this initiative demonstrates the power of collective mobilization and firm commitment to break the silence, change mentalities and offer a better future for African women.

It is important to emphasize that the fight against obstetric fistula is a fight for the dignity, health and fundamental rights of women. By continuing awareness-raising, prevention and access to treatment efforts, we can collectively achieve the goal of eliminating this disease by 2030 and building a future without obstetric fistula in Africa.
