The African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP) announces the launch of an innovative online training program designed for African women journalists, focusing on climate change coverage. This initiative, scheduled to run from December 2-20, 2024, aims to strengthen the capabilities of African correspondents in the crucial field of environmental journalism.

Responding to Current Climate Challenges

As Africa faces increasing impacts from extreme weather events, this training comes at a critical time. The African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC), in collaboration with ECA and the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), has designed this program to address the gap in specialized skills for climate issues media coverage.

A Comprehensive and Practical Program

The three-week training offers a bilingual curriculum (French-English) covering essential aspects such as:

  • Climate change science and its regional impacts
  • Global climate governance and negotiation frameworks
  • Human dimensions and gender perspectives
  • Climate investigative journalism techniques
  • Use of modern tools for impactful reporting

An Adapted Pedagogical Approach

The program adopts an asynchronous learning method, allowing participants to follow courses at their own pace while benefiting from daily expert support. The modules include various materials: PowerPoint presentations, detailed notes, and discussion guidelines, ensuring comprehensive and interactive training.

Who Can Participate?

This training is open to African women journalists from all backgrounds, whether they work in print media, broadcasting, or digital platforms. Interested candidates have until November 20, 2024, to submit their application through IDEP’s online platform.

A Recognized Certification

Upon completion of the training, participants who successfully complete all modules and pass the final examination will receive a completion certificate from IDEP, certifying their new skills in climate journalism.

Broader Impact

This initiative is part of a broader approach to improve the quality and relevance of climate change reporting in Africa while promoting women’s participation in this crucial field. For more information, interested candidates can directly contact IDEP’s Training and Research Division in Dakar.

The training represents a unique opportunity for African women journalists to develop their expertise in a field of vital importance for the continent’s future while contributing to better public awareness of climate issues.

This program underscores IDEP’s commitment to capacity building and gender equality in Africa’s response to climate change. Through this training, participants will not only enhance their professional skills but also join a network of climate correspondents working to shape the narrative around one of the most pressing challenges of our time.
