Benin is one of the few countries in the sub-region sincerely committed to combating all forms of violence against women and girls.
The final official events of the campaign against violence against women and girls in Benin have taken place. On Saturday, December 7, 2024, a symbolic march followed by a mini-concert was held in Parakou. Participants, representing various socio-professional groups, called for collective action to put an end to violence against women and girls in Benin.
With messages displayed on placards and read aloud, participants vehemently protested against the trivialization of violence against women. They called on judicial authorities to take stern measures against perpetrators of sexual violence, especially those targeting young girls, with a focus on the most vulnerable.
Leading the march were Madam Mariam CHABI TALATA, Vice President of the Republic of Benin; Madam Véronique TOGNIFODÉ, Minister of Social Affairs and Microfinance; Madam Huguette BOKPÈ GNANCADJA, President of the National Institute for Women (INF); Mr. Richmond TIEMOKO, Resident Representative of the United Nations Population Fund; the UNICEF Representative; the Prefect of Borgou; the Swiss Cooperation through UGP-PAEG; WHO representatives; the Mayor of Parakou; municipal and local officials; religious and traditional leaders; and several other partners.
The participants’ appeals did not fall on deaf ears. In their speeches, Minister Véronique TOGNIFODÉ and INF President Huguette BOKPÈ GNANCADJA assured the public that Benin remains one of the few countries in the sub-region truly committed to fighting all forms of violence against women and girls. According to the Minister, President Patrice TALON personally champions this cause. This explains the reinforcement of the INF’s role to have a stronger presence on the ground, deter offenders, and provide legal support for victims, she explained.
A reminder of legislative measures, as well as care and support systems in place for survivors, was provided. The head of the Integrated Support Center for Gender-Based Violence (CIPEC-VBG) in Parakou also highlighted statistics and emphasized how much the Government and its partners are investing in supporting female survivors.
Speaking on behalf of all Technical and Financial Partners of the Gender and Social Protection Thematic Group, Mr. Richmond TIEMOKO expressed satisfaction with the high-level commitment of Beninese authorities to combating violence against women and girls in Benin. According to him, this commitment serves as a strong motivation for partners to continue supporting government initiatives in this area.
For the Prefect of Borgou and the Mayor of Parakou, local efforts will be sustained to combat violence, in line with the Government’s vision.
