As popular wisdom says, “He who begins well has done half the work.” Thus, academic success is built from the first days of class. It is therefore the parents’ duty to help children start the school year well by helping them adopt the right mindset and habits that will help them throughout the school year.
In this article, we will explore 4 foundations to ensure your children’s success.
1. A study routine
It is essential to establish a study routine with your child. This routine, created with their participation, will give them the impression of having decided on their work routine themselves, instead of feeling that it is imposed on them. Set daily study hours with the child, according to the school’s schedule, including breaks for extracurricular activities in the daily program. The key to success lies in regularity, have them adopt a daily study ritual from the very first days.
To support this study routine, create a dedicated study space. This space should help them concentrate away from distractions and feel ready to work.
2. Daily reading
Reading is an essential pillar for success in all subjects. Consider having them adopt daily reading sessions as a fun activity. School books, tales, comics, educational magazines, etc… Encourage your child to cultivate a passion for reading through various types of media and to read for 15 to 30 minutes each day depending on their age.
Buy a notebook for new words discovered or any other information your child deems important. If they are already in secondary school, teach them how to make reading notes.
3. Set up a monitoring and reward system
To motivate your child to maintain their efforts in the long term, set realistic short and medium-term goals together, with appropriate rewards. These don’t always have to be material. One of their favorite family activities, choosing the meal for one day of the week, etc. can also work well.
To track their progress, create a progress tracking chart, visible to the whole family, and celebrate every small victory.
4. Promote a holistic approach to well-being
A healthy mind in a healthy body learns better! Therefore, think about ensuring sufficient sleep between 8 to 10 hours depending on age, and offering a balanced diet. Have them do a sport of their choice at least once a week to strengthen their health and fighting spirit. Also, schedule moments of relaxation and leisure to avoid burnout.
These habits, initiated at the beginning of the school year, can promote your child’s learning and development. Consistency being the key, maintain these habits throughout the year to see lasting results.
Keep in mind that every child is unique. You should therefore adapt these tips according to your child’s personality and specific needs.
